Juggling Motherhood & Entrepreneurship

Is this my cup of tea?

It was a Sunday afternoon and I came home from church and was about to sneak in a little granny nap when I got inspired for this blog post. I felt compelled to share some thoughts on the unique position that mothers are in when it comes to balancing family life and business.

It is anything but easy but I genuinely believe that it’s worth a proper shot.

For me personally…as a mum and a passionate email marketer, starting my own business felt like more than just a career move—it was a way to take control of my life and create the flexibility I needed to be there for my family.

Why Be An Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship has become a way for so many women to shape our futures, balancing the work we love with the lives we want to live. It’s also about building something meaningful, on my terms, while showing my kids what it looks like to follow your passions and make them work for you.

The Skills Mums Bring to Business

Honestly… for the longest time, the wide range of skills and experiences of a woman who has taken time off from their full time career to look after her children have not been valued enough. Mums can seriously bring a unique set of skills to entrepreneurship and it’s good to take stock of them.

(1) MULTI-TASKING

Women who stay home to raise their children are highly adaptable and often excel in  multitasking - skills that are invaluable in the ever-changing landscape of small business. Those who have started their own brands come to learn quickly that not only do they need to be creative in their products or services, but also need to learn to do their own marketing or at least be familiar with what is involved.

From building a website and learning SEO strategies, to crafting ads in meta and google to stand out against competitors, while simultaneously build brand awareness on social media platforms by posting 7 days a week just to gain some traction with algorithms. It’s endless.

(2) PROBLEM-SOLVING

As a mum and a business owner, problem-solving often comes down to thinking on the fly—like when a child’s school calls about a forgotten lunch or an unexpected sick day. This same quick-thinking skill applies to last-minute client changes or supply delays that need immediate solutions.

Don’t forget that mums frequently have to balance each of their childrens’ unique needs, managing limited time, energy, and resources to keep everyone happy. In business, this translates into efficiently juggling priorities like budget constraints, time management, and team needs.

(3) PATIENCE & EMPATHY

I strongly believe that mums also bring an advantage of enduring patience and strong empathy to the table. We know these traits are essential in parenting, as they are for building beautiful client relationships. Such skills can truly be useful in handling customer feedback thoughtfully, and build team morale when the business grows.

In a traditional role, these skills may go unseen, but in entrepreneurship, they’re essential to sustainable growth and a positive client experience.

What No One Tells You About Mum Entrepreneurship

Of course there is a flip side to this, and unfortunately the challenges of entrepreneurship are often oversimplified especially on social media, with picture-perfect posts making it look like a quick and easy path to financial freedom.

I guess I’m hoping to share here in this blog… a gentle reminder that any entrepreneurial journey requires hard work and building a business takes time…even years. It involves far more than just a good idea. It requires hard work, dedication, constant learning, and a willingness to invest both financially and emotionally.

It also takes wisdom to know what you can do and what might need to be outsourced.  The reality is that it is highly unlikely that one person can be good at every aspect needed for running a business. Plus there’s just not enough hours in a day!

Some of the ways that successful business women have delegated include:

  • A virtual assistant for admin tasks

  • A nanny to support the children

  • An expert web developer to build a streamlined website

  • A bookkeeper to track business expenses

  • An email marketer to craft vibrant campaigns :)

Key Takeaways

I’m grateful that my skills and passion for marketing have led me to be able to offer an essential Email Marketing Service that supports other women in business. Watching their businesses grow through our collaboration is more than just fulfilling; it’s a reminder that women can do amazing things both at home and in business.

If you are considering this juggling act of running a household and turning your creative endeavours into a thriving business, simply take inventory of your strengths and USE THEM! You have the skills.

And every now and then, it’s worthwhile reminding yourself why you chose the path of entrepreneurship. For me, I feel empowered and blessed to show my children that I get to build a business doing something that I love, whilst doing school pick ups, pack lunches, and sending them to swim class.
